Thus review is for hanging lake - what a beautiful lake! The hike is pretty serious for just a mile. Boots/running shoes definitely recommend. Saw some tourists near the top in flip flops. They looked miserable.
The hike was a lot longer than we expected and it gets pretty extreme near the top, definitely more than we bargained for. We saw plenty of children and a few older folks but it wasn't exactly a fun time for them; it was a workout. It took us over an hour to summit going at a leisurely pace, but the view was well worth the climb.
Kind of dirty and not great to go to for views in the afternoon. The sun doesn't shine on the water then. Nice place to stop though if you need a break from driving.
A great challenging trail all up a rocky path. In the summer, one must arrive EARLY to get a parking spot and beat the heat. This a very busy trail and not for young children as rocks in trail too large to negotiate. Hanging lake is pristine beauty,!
In the future the hike may require a day pass to enter in order to cut down on visitors, and it's definitely needed. There was a line for the parking lot with a half hour wait and we were constantly picking up plastic bottles other people had thrown down.
Thank you so much guys for your help. You were definately the super heroes of the weekend. You will never know how much you are all appreciated. You put your lives on the line every time you put your lights on.... Thanks!
The journey was definitely worth it though. At the top is a breathtaking waterfall with a crystal clear, blue lake with a fantastic view. The climb is well shaded (after a point) and follows a gorgeous stream with multiple small waterfalls every few feet. Near the top is a narrow, rock staircase that was by far the most treacherous part, but a handrail made it much easier.
P.S. No dogs allowed
Would definitely recommend to anyone, but please, clean up after yourself, leave the kids at home, and leave nothing but footprints.
CDOT guys are awesome! Our engine blew 5 miles east of glenwood springs on 70. Threw a rod, CDOT showed up, blocked the lane behind us, called for a tow truck & took us up to hanging lake rest stop to park the car for the night. When we went to pick the car up we had some issues loading onto trailer, CDOT shows up & saves the day again!
